Ruth won 2 complete game victories over Toronto, pitches 5 innings in a relief performance in an Oriole win over Toronto and lost a 10 inning 2-1 game in Toronto. Alas, Ruth was only with the Orioles until July 10, 1914 - so we missed our chance for such a game.fred shokenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10429261046384436269noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2239328455403044849.post-11654871045389160542013-12-07T13:21:28.882-05:002013-12-07T13:21:28.882-05:00Funny how tendencies have a habit of sticking arou...Funny how tendencies have a habit of sticking around. I saw Sanchez pitch as a high school prospect in the 2009 Tournament of Stars in Cary, NC. While he had that easy delivery and good velo that earned him more than his share of excitement from the scouting community, I came away with a 'what the hell am I missing here' impression. His lack of command and inability to repeat pitches stood out like a sore thumb. His results weren't bad, given the unrefined tendencies of high school batters to swing at high-velo or high-movement pitches that aren't strikes. But still, I thought he was a project, and it raised my eyebrows when he went in the first round with an almost-$800K bonus.

You never know when a player can blow up, but following my own son's progress to pro ball made it glaringly obvious that for a group of professionals whose sole job it is to evaluate talent, scouts just get it wrong with their projectability assessments way more often than they get it right (in both directions!).

To me at the time, Sanchez should have been more like a 3rd-to-5th round sign. His lingering tendencies have produced results that have proven that so far. I do hope for his sake that he has a serendipitous encounter with some pitching coach who is able to spot that as-yet unknown little fault in his delivery and turn his fortunes around. Personally, I think he could bring his throwing arm back a shade sooner than he does so he has more time to control it, and incorporate more of his lower half for momentum to the plate. JMHO though...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2239328455403044849.post-24051508490385992702013-06-01T21:14:39.018-04:002013-06-01T21:14:39.018-04:00Just read several of your articles and found them ...Just read several of your articles and found them very readable and informative. Do you really think that someone like Renfroe or Trey Ball will develop into the the contenders that the blue jays want them to be? Is there any chance the jays will look at any hitters or are they mostly focused on pitchers at this point?

AdamAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2239328455403044849.post-12108427534628232172013-04-11T15:24:26.261-04:002013-04-11T15:24:26.261-04:00Thanks, Will.

They are still carefully monitoring his innings - he only threw 90 IP last year. He still needs to build arm strength, as well as work on his command.
If you're a Sports Illustrated fan, they had a great article on how Tampa develops their pitchers in the last issue.
So, I would say 2015 at the earliest, with 2016 being more likely.
Osuna was paid a $1.5 mill bonus - this was paid by the major league club.
After that point, his salary is paid by the minor league club he plays for. Minor league scale for full season Low A players is $1350/month, with a $25 daily meal allowance. And minor league players are only paid during their season.
When the Blue Jays are ready to put Osuna on their 40 man roster, they have to purchase his contract from the minor league club.
I hope the Jays take their time with him as well, even with the shelling the big league staff has taken so far.Clutchlingshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09852802415556322984noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2239328455403044849.post-73839419771317746712013-04-11T12:56:14.067-04:002013-04-11T12:56:14.067-04:00Greetings Cluthlings, great blog! If only the jays could be off to the great start that we're seeing over in Dunedin (although last night against the tigers was a different story- best game they've played this year!) I have two questions for you:

First, how long until we see Sanchez called up for the jays?

Second, what are the details of Osuna's contract with the jays? I read somewhere that he was already on a 1.5 million dollar contract as a 16 year old kid, is this true?

I watched this video of Osuna striking out 13 of the 17 batters he faced over in Vancouver last year, and i've been hopeful ever since!

All the best,

WillAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01573473397358577380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2239328455403044849.post-11844250474687651082013-04-11T12:53:16.249-04:002013-04-11T12:53:16.249-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01573473397358577380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2239328455403044849.post-78156800229832868752013-04-08T20:11:14.290-04:002013-04-08T20:11:14.290-04:00I love Gose, by the way...would like to see him hi... I love Gose, by the way...would like to see him hit more, as would everyone else. He really looked like a different player after his 2nd promotion. Some more time at Triple A isn't a bad thing.Clutchlingshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09852802415556322984noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2239328455403044849.post-39733464958082536542013-04-08T20:09:33.291-04:002013-04-08T20:09:33.291-04:00Thanks for the comments, Mark.

Just the same, he had minimal playing time in the GCL last summer before leaving for football, and now that he's transferred, the last I heard he was still involved with spring practice at Ole Miss.
So, despite his athleticism, he's behind a number of other prospects. And until he decides to commit to baseball, I can't see him higher on my list.
Then there are his legal troubles, and it sounds like his mom has huge issues, too (arrested at one of his South. Miss. games, had to be restrained at one of his HS baseball games),

As for Sanchez over Stroman, it would be because of Sanchez' ceiling, and the fact that Stroman profiles more as a reliever. I'll take a 200 IP guy over one who throws 100.
And I agree that Osuna may turn out to be the best of the bunch. He had a great debut at Lansing. So I was hoping you could answer a few questions.

First off, I noticed you didn't include Anthony Alford in your rankings, just wondered why? Or has he switched to football? (personally I think he's twice the outfielder than he is a wide receiver)

I remember watching John Stilson in college playing out of Texas, great young talent, but still a long way to go. Very quick for a catcher too FYI!

Interesting to see you ranked Sanchez ahead if Stroman. Maybe i'm a little biased after reading about Stroman when he was over playing for Duke, but I would argue Stroman is a more established pitcher. His fastball is major league ready whereas Sanchez still has developing to do in many aspects of his game. Again, this is just my opinion. Thoughts?

I see Osuna as having the most potential in this group, I agree that he's still a major gamble, and having just turned 17, there's still a lot of time for things to go wrong. But i'm still very hopeful for Roberto O and I wish him all the best this year!

Completely Unrelated Side note: What's your take on Anthony goose?

Great blog you have going Clutchlings, can't wait to see how your blog and these new prospects develop!

MarcMarc Letendrehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15258996780585660564noreply@blogger.com
